As one of Mexico’s most beautiful beach destinations it is home to luxurious world-class hotels, golf courses and fishing activities, hosting the largest marlin tournament in the world. Golf Digest lists Cabo San Lucas 14th in its list of top 50 worldwide golf destinations. Los Cabos' rich marine eco-system draws thousands of tourists who wish to experience its diversity and beauty. During the winter (mid-December through late February), gray whales swim to Los Cabos from the straits of Alaska and Siberia to give birth. Los Cabos offers a relaxed atmosphere to its visitors as well as great dining, shopping and nightlife entertainment. The northern state of Chihuahua is a land of magnificent scenery known for its mountains, canyons and deserts. It is the largest state in Mexico extending over 95,399 square miles and its spectacular canyons are the biggest in North America. Founded in 1709, the capital, Chihuahua City has been an important cultural and industrial center throughout Mexican history. Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, independence leader and founding father of Mexico, was imprisoned and executed in Chihuahua City on June 11, 1811. One hundred years later it became the headquarters for the Mexican Revolutionary, Pancho Villa. Chihuahua's rich history prompted the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to list Paquime, a small city in Chihuahua, the most important archaeological site in northern Mexico. Chihuahua is home to one of the world’s greatest engineering feats: the scenic railroad line that runs through numerous canyons from Chihuahua City to the Pacific Ocean. Reader's Digest describes Mexico's Copper Canyon railroad trip as "the most dramatic train ride in the western hemisphere". Copper Canyon, or Barranca del Cobre, is located in the State of Chihuahua and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Copper Canyon consists of a series of twenty canyons that were formed by six rivers over thousands of years, making it seven times larger than the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The railway line Chihuahua-Pacifico or “El Chepe” is over 650 kilometers in length, crosses 39 bridges (the longest bridge is 500 meters long), and 86 tunnels (the longest over 1.5 kilometers meters long). This comfortable first class train runs through the rugged cliffs of the Sierra Madre mountains, allowing passengers to enjoy Copper Canyon’s natural beauty. Copper Canyon is home to the Tarahumara Indians, descendants of the Aztecs. The Tarahumara lead simple lives, selling their crafts and food to visitors who take the Copper Canyon Train Ride. This is truly a spectacular tour! |
