Jack the Ripper Haunts walking tour with London Walks
http://www.walks.com/Homepage/Tuesdays_Walks/default.aspx#12852
Tuesday September 8th 7.15pm (tour leaves at 7.30pm) or Sarah is happy to meet up earlier for a drink or coffee.

Location: Tower Hill Tube station
Cost: £7 paid directly to London walks tour guide.

Meeting point: outside Tower Hill tube station
The world's leading expert on Jack the Ripper guides the walk on Tuesday nights for this reason and the fact that the number of people who turn up for the Friday night tours are excessively large so Sarah has chosen a Tuesday night.
About the tour:
He came silently out of the midnight shadows of August 31, 1888. Watching. Stalking. Butchering raddled, drink-sodden East End prostitutes. Leaving a trail of blood that led...nowhere. Yes, something wicked this way walked, for this is the Ripper's slashing grounds. We evoke that autumn of gaslight and fog, of menacing shadows and stealthy footsteps as we inspect the murder sites, sift through the evidence - in all its gory detail - and get to grips, so to speak, with the main suspects. Afterward you can steady your nerves in The Ten Bells, the pub where the victims - perhaps under the steely gaze of the Ripper himself - tried to forget the waking nightmare.

Hi everyone

Some of you specifically requested that we meet in the Waterloo area and so I have chosen the Royal Festival Hall at the South Bank Centre. There should be plenty of space plus lots of options if anyone wants to head for coffee, drinks or food afterwards.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some details on where we are meeting (please read carefully!)

Riverside Terrace Cafe
First Floor (ground floor being river level)
Royal Festival Hall
South Bank Centre

The closest tubes are Waterloo and Embankment.

The Riverside Terrace Cafe is a large space which leads onto a terrace facing the river. If you've never been to the South Bank area before, I would recommend that you take a look at the website for the South Bank Centre where they have a "visiting us" section which leads you to a map of the complex. You will see that the map shows the Riverside Terrace (facing the river). If you click on "Royal Festival Hall" on the same site and click on "eat and drink", there's a small picture of the serving area of the cafe we are meeting at.

I shall be wearing a YELLOW top so look out for me. If it's sunny, I shall be outside on the terrace. If it's not, I shall be inside.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are lots of new members to the group - welcome and I hope you can all make it along to this meetup.

As usual, if you have travel plans, ideas and tips you would like to share, then do let me know.

If, like me, you're becoming increasingly jealous of seeing people at work leaving to go on their summer holidays, then it might be time to plan something! The August bank holiday is coming up and it would be good to see if anyone has the appetite to plan a group trip....

See you all there!

Little Venice Walk

Sunday 19th July at 2pm (approx 2 hours)

Cost is £12 and payable on the day directly to the guide- London Walks

Meeting at Warwick Avenue Tube station between 1.45 and 2pm. THIS EVENT IS BEING ORGANISED BY SARAH DONALDSON. Sarah will be wearing a pink baseball cap and will be there to meet you all at Warwick Avenue Tube station.

Further details:

If you fancy something completely different, this is the walk for you. Little Venice is the prettiest and most romantic spot in town. A unique combination of white stucco, greenery, and water, it boasts the finest early Victorian domestic architecture in London; a Who's Who of famous residents (Robert Browning, Edward Fox, Joan Collins, Annie Lennox, and Sigmund Freud to name but a few); and a jewel of a "village" street. And that's not to mention its canals. One of them - Regent's Canal - is known as the "loveliest inland waterway in England". Part of the walk is along the canal towpath - which to this day is studded with fragments of evidence that bring the Age of Canals to life.

Hi everyone - I have planned for us to have a meal at Ciao Bella in Holborn. As I said in my email, PLEASE only RSVP yes if you can definitely come. I have to make a reservation and it would be terrible if loads of people drop out close to the time and I am left with a half empty table!!

If you're not sure, please RSVP "NO" or don't RSVP. If you're free and would like to come closer to the date, then I can always add you on to the table.

Thanks for your understanding!

The meal starts at 8pm and is in Holborn (central line). I shall put some directions to the restaurant on this message shortly.

Hi everyone

At the last meetup, a few of us were saying that it would be fun to have some drinks on a Friday night. One of our members lives near a really nice bar / brasserie in Queen's Park and we thought it would be fun to have the drinks there. Hugo's is located on a cobbled back street / mews so it should be quite chilled out (rather than really noisy and raucous!)

Queen's Park is on the Bakerloo line and also has an overground station.

Join us if you can!
