"Meet at Miami Beach Bicycle Center, on 5th St., in the same building as CVS Pharmacy, to sign your release of liability. Ride starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please note that helmets are mandatory--if you don't have one, you can rent one there."

Both residents and tourists can experience attractive and unique views of Miami Beach while cruising through the city during the monthly community bike ride. Highlights of the route include the Art Deco District along Ocean Drive, waterfront views of Indian Creek, and the beautiful mansions along North Bay Road. Dozens of South Floridians have been participating in the picturesque bike ride since its inception in 2001.
The community bike ride is held on the second Saturday of every month and is free to everyone. Starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Miami Beach Bicycle Center on the corner of 5 Street and Washington Avenue, the two-hour ride covers the entire length of Miami Beach, from South Pointe Park to North Shore Open Space Park. "Over the years, the bike ride has been quite successful. We see an average of 30-50 riders each month," says Jack Ruiz of the Miami Beach Bicycle Center.
The bike riders have a variety of reasons for participating in the 15-mile trek. "This is a great way to exercise while enjoying the beauty of Miami Beach," says Jakes Olson.
To ensure the safety of every rider, the Miami Beach Police Department provides an escort throughout the entire ride. [Note from JS: Sirens will get a bit loud.] Participants are encouraged to ride at their own pace, making the ride fun and safe for people of all ages and abilities. Mario Pina said, "I could choose my own pace during the ride, and don't feel rushed as if it was a race." As an extra safety precaution, helmets are required for all participants.
"We hope that by getting people excited about biking, more people may be inspired to use their bike as not only a form of recreation and exercise, but as a means of transportation," said Christine Leduc, Miami Beach Bicycle Coordinator. [JS: Sure! As long as I can get the police escort....]
Participants may register at the Miami Beach Bicycle Center, at 601 5th Street the morning of the ride; center opens at 8:15 a.m. Limited helmet and bike rentals available. Water is provided, but this is so well-attended we ran out halfway through ride last time; suggest packing at least one bottle for yourself.
