Not for everyone but:
This may sound odd but the one thing that I could not find and could not live without in Europe was a simple manual can opener. I try to eat some meals from the grocer for budget and health reasons. Cans that have self opening tops can cost 2 X's as much as a can that you need to open with an opener.
Otherwise the usual layers, good walking/dress shoes, sunglasses (even for the bright lights at concerts), underwear and socks (it is true - you can't have too many and laundry is a drag). Also consider plug adapters for cell (I recommend renting a satelite cell if do not have one - very difficult to communicate otherwise) , computer etc.

looking for things like what you think is absolutely essential to
