SUMMARY:An Evening in Conversation with Stephanie Elizondo Griest
DESCRIPTION:Travel Meetups > San Francisco Travel Book Club and Lecture Ser
ies\n\nJoin the SF Travel Book Club and Lecture Series for an amazing Eveni
ng in Conversation with Stephanie Elizondo Griest!\n\nMexican Enough: My Li
fe Between the Borderlines\n\nGrowing up in a half-white\, half-brown town
and family in South Texas\, Stephanie Elizondo Griest struggled with her cu
ltural identity. Upon turning thirty\, she ventured to her mother's native
Mexico to do a little root-searching and improve her “Tarzan Lite” Spanish.
She stumbled upon a burgeoning social movement that shook parts of the nat
ion to its core. MEXICAN ENOUGH chronicles her journey\, from the narco-inf
ested border town of Nuevo Laredo to the highlands of Chiapas. She investig
ates the murder of a prominent gay activist\, sneaks into prison to meet wi
th resistance fighters\, rallies with rebels in Oaxaca\, and interviews sco
res of migrant workers and the families they were forced to leave behind. T
ravel companions include a Polish thief\, a Border Patrol agent\, and a Dom
inatrix. Part memoir\, part journalistic reportage\, MEXICAN ENOUGH illumin
ates how we cast off our identity in our youth\, only to strive to find it
again as adults -- and the\nlessons to be learned along the way. MEXICAN EN
OUGH is the August pick of the National Latino Book Club\, the Association
of American Publishers\, and Las Comadres. \n\nAbout the Author: Stephanie
Elizondo Griest\n\nStephanie Elizondo Griest has mingled with the Russian M
afiya\, polished\nChinese propaganda\, and belly danced with Cuban rumba qu
eens. These\nadventures inspired her award-winning memoir AROUND THE BLOC:
 MY LIFE IN\nMOSCOW\, BEIJING\, AND HAVANA (Villard/Random House\, 2004) and
guidebook 100 PLACES EVERY WOMAN SHOULD GO (Travelers Tales\, 2007). She h
as explored five continents and once drove 45\,000 miles across America in
a Honda Hatchback named Bertha. A 2005-2006 Hodder Fellow at Princeton Univ
ersity\, she recently won the Richard J. Margolis Award for Social Justice
Reporting. Visit her website at www.mexicanenough.com.\n\nSan Francisco\, C

SUMMARY:An Evening in Conversation with Rolf Potts - SF Travel Lecture Seri
 es Nov. 2008
DESCRIPTION:Travel Meetups > San Francisco Travel Book Club and Lecture Ser
ies\n\nFor the past ten years\, Rolf Potts has taken his keen postmodern tr
avel sensibility into the far fringes of five continents for such prestigio
us publications as National Geographic Traveler\, Salon.com\, and The New Y
ork Times Magazine. This book documents his boldest\, funniest\, and most r
evealing journeys from getting stranded without water in the Libyan desert\
, to crashing the set of a Leonardo DiCaprio movie in Thailand\, to learnin
g the secrets of Tantric sex in a dubious Indian ashram.\n\nMarco Polo Didn
't Go There is more than just an entertaining journey into fascinating corn
ers of the world. The book is a unique window into travel writing\, with e
ach chapter containing a "commentary track" endnotes that reveal the ragged
edges behind the experience and creation of each tale. Offbeat and insigh
tful\, this book is an engrossing read for students of travel writing as we
ll as armchair wanderers.\n\nRolf Potts Author Bio:\nRolf Potts has reporte
d from more than sixty countries for the likes of Salon.com\, Slate.com\, N
ational Geographic Traveler\, Outside\, the New York Times Magazine\, Condé
Nast Traveler\, The Believer\, and National Public Radio. His adventures h
ave taken him across six continents\, and include piloting a fishing boat 9
00 miles down the Laotian Mekong\, hitchhiking across Eastern Europe\, trav
ersing Israel on foot\, bicycling across Burma\, and driving a Land Rover f
rom Sunnyvale\, California to Ushuaia\, Argentina. He has won four Lowell T
homas Awards for travel writing\, and his essays have appeared in over twen
ty literary anthologies\, including The Best Travel Writing\, The Best Amer
ican Travel Writing\, The Best Creative Nonfiction\, and several collection
s of travel humor.\n\nThough he rarely stays in one place for more than a f
ew weeks or months\, Potts feels somewhat at home in Bangkok\, Cairo\, Pusa
 n\, New Orleans\, and north-central Kansas\, where he keeps a small farmhou
se on thirty acres near his family. Each July he can be found in France\, w
here he is the summer writer-in-residence at the Paris American Academy. Hi
 s online home is at www.rolfpotts.com.\n\nSan Francisco\, CA 94123 - USA\n
